Pocket Chart Activities
09.07.04 (4:29 pm)   [edit]

How is the School Year going? Today was our first day, and it was wonderful! Here is a great link for pocket chart poems:

http://www.kinderkorner.com/names2.html#monthly" title="http://www.kinderkorner.com/names2.html#monthly" target="_blank"http://www.kinderkorner.com/n...

I read the poems with students in the morning, have a second copie with words seperated for phonemic awareness activities in the afternoon, and use it for independent centers (word match, word sort, etc) later in the year.

Parent Communication
08.26.04 (3:59 am)   [edit]

There are so many ways to communicate with parents at the beginning of a school year.  I think it is best to have all your expectations for teh classroom stated in your own class handbook (you may need to clear this with your school admin first). Here are some good tips. I'll post mine as soon as I finish it.

Mrs. Burns Classroom Handbook

Virtual Vine Kindergarten Handbook

I would definitely appreciate links to any others that you can find. I would generally include these sections:

 • A little about the Teachers and our Philosophy on Kindergarten

 • Expectations for the Classroom (Behavior and Academic)

 • Communication

 • Attendance

 • Homework

 • Parent Involvement

 • (Snacks, Volunteering to read, Fieldwork trips)

 • Class Celebrations

You can also set up a "Giving Tree" in our outside your classroom.  On each leaf of the Giving Tree you should post supplies that you are looking for that are not included on your regular supply list. For example, parents may be able to contribute:

 • aluminum pie pans

 • old cookie sheets or baking sheets (no longer needed)

 • old clipboards

 • bag of beans (lima, kidney, etc)

 • q-tips

 • stuffed animals (in good shape and no longer needed)

 • board games (all pieces included)

Supplies can be seasonal as well, such as a string of lights around Christmastime, or more kleenexes in the winter and spring (allergy alert!). The look of your tree can also change. For any parents who are familiar with the Giving Tree this project will have special significance. Perhaps you can post of a picture of the book cover next to the tree!

Parents are not only to give, but also to receive. We need their support if we're going to be successful in our classrooms, so I always try to appreciate all the parents in my room for their hard work! This can include a baked treat, an apple, or just a phone call!

An end is only a new beginning!

Now that our school year is over, it's time to start planning for the next one!

I have added some links of places to get started:

Kinderkorner's Back to School Theme Page
Kinderhive, another great site I've created a link to.

Good luck and happy planning!
oh and have a fun summer!

Sensory Tables
05.18.04 (6:42 pm)   [edit]
I love this website on how to create and add spice to your sand/water/sensory table . I think the kids will love it and that it will be a very useful teaching tool!

Two Rivers
05.01.04 (7:58 pm)   [edit]
I am adding a link to my new school, Two Rivers, which is a charter school opening in South East Washington DC this fall. It's very exciting; it's an expeditionary learning school which means that we will be doing all project based learning. It also emphasizes the whole child, and understands that school is a place where students do not just focus on academics but on becoming well rounded citizens! We will be concentrating on literacy and the arts as well as service learning. I'm very excited about it, and will be reporting on progress as the year continues.

As it stands we are finishing up the school year. As a kindergarten teacher we have a very elaborate graduation every year. I have found this to be kind of a waste of time and energy; for me the planning is intense, and the for the kids it eats into their learning time. I wonder what other K teachers think.

Mrs. Burns Kindergarten Page
04.18.04 (2:39 pm)   [edit]
 I found an alternate link to Apples for a Teacher , hopefully it will work for a while. Mrs. Burns, from her website, is doing everything a well rounded kindergarten should, and I love this resource! I hope her updates are more consistent, and her theme page is updated--it's awesome.

More good literacy center activities!

NEW Georgia Standards
04.15.04 (8:34 am)   [edit]
For you Georgia residents, there will be NEW standards for students in our public schools starting next fall.

You can find them at:

What do you think--better or worse?

Literacy Centers
04.14.04 (10:17 am)   [edit]
I wanted to share this great website I found with literacy centers (for first grade, but very flexible for kinder or 2nd):

Also, one of my favorite sites is down--I don't know what happened!! I hope it comes back soon--here's the link:

Even though it's dead now, I plan on checking it every so often. It's a great resource!

Plant journals
04.13.04 (4:32 pm)   [edit]
Today we started our plant journals. I didn't have any dirt so I gave the kids the lima beans and we wrapped them in paper towels, then placed them in plastic cups. A few hours later (you'll see the purpose for this), we examined what happened to the beans (the casing starts to wrinkle--this allows the seed to germinate or whatnot, and start growing. Tomorrow we will plant the seeds.

We started our plant logs by writing a sentence about what they observed and drawing a picture of it. This is on level for most kids (it's just a sentence, then they have time to write a regular journal), but some kids did not understand.

The following sites have great plant ideas:
Virtual Vine Spring Theme
Kinderthemes Plant Unit

I get a lot of these links from The Learning Leap , but you really have to sort through. Some of them have great activities that are just busy work or for show--you really have to think about whether it is meaningful.

Sibling Rivalry!!
04.12.04 (2:36 pm)   [edit]
On this episode of Anne of Green Gables, Felix and Felicity are fighting--as usual! Many of our students have brothers or sisters, or cousins or friends that they may get into fights with. This lesson highlights the importance of family, and looking at the things that make our family members special.

PBS' teachersource has many lesson plans with little video clips attached that can hook students' attention, as well as different resources you can use to continue the lesson.

 Why is it important to talk about family relationships in the classroom?
